Slingerland Identification for restoration Last viewed: 2 days ago

I'm wondering if anyone can help narrow down the specifics (if there are any) on this presumably mid 70's Slingerland maple kit I found for restoration. The bass is 24x14 Floor tom is 18x16 two mounted toms 13x9 and 14x10 and a matching wood snare 5-1/2x14. I was told it was from 1978 but the previous owner was not sure....The chrome is in very good shape and shines up nicely! The bass has 4 internal pointy claws. There is a black "M" stamped inside each shell as shown in the photos. I had photos before disassembly but never realized they were too large to attach, hence the lousy photos! I think this kit had been previously wrapped as it has been obviously refinished and stained/laquered...it was a sloppys job so I figured I would make it a project! Any suggestions are certainly welcome...this is my first restoration!!

The "M" stamp indicates that they were originally stained or lacquered. Slingerland shells that were wrapped received a "P" stamp.

Welcome to VDF, by the way!

I'll leave refinishing suggestions to the pros! There are a few guys here that have worked wonders on some beat up drums shells.

FWIW the Slingerland stained finishes were not all that great during the 70's. I had a mid 70's 8pc kit in mahogany finish like yours and it looked pretty much the same. There's also some variance in shades and depth. I bought my kit at a custom/pro shop in NYC where I was brought to a room filled with shells and we picked the sizes and matched the shades best we could. Then it was drilled for the tom mount hardware. It wasn't a ordered kit from the factory. It's possible maybe some of those shells have the factory finish. Real nice project kit too!!! Nice drum sizes. Welcome to VDF.

Thanks for all the interest folks! This kit was a real find! I paid $350. for it and it has the original hi-hat stand and 2 original cymbal stands, not to mention the Ludwig speed king pedal which is pretty cool! The previous owner did not have the original snare stand or pedal but everything else (even old fiber hard cases) were included. All my previous research led me to the Super Rock kit except the snare was not correct! There was stain (i was bummed ) on the badges and some VERY SlGHT blue color in some of the depressions where the hardware was hence my assumptions! It all cleaned up nicley!! Maybe someone had painted it then stripped it??? Anyway it's all ready for a finish now!! THANKS! Any other input is WELCOME!!

Cool set.

Serial number puts the set at roughly 1974-75.

I have two sets of Slingys with the "M" They have a stained maple exterior.

Thanks POP...Is there a secret to reading the serial numbers...the all seem pretty close! I could post them pretty easily....With my limited slingerland knowledge I've come to the same conclusion that you have...THANKS!! I'd love to see what yours look like!!
