Slingerland ID and FT mystery (Stage Band)

Loading...

So I just snagged up this little 4 piece - snare was not matching but the 3 pieces were early 60s Slingerland - which I tentatively have IDed as a "Stage Band" kit. I understand that this is RARE (as indicated by Steve Maxwell of one that he recently sold -

[ame]http://www.ebay.com/itm/Slingerland-stage-band-drum-set-12-13-16-22-rare-sizes-/161148036970?hash=item25852be76a&nma=true&si=82TTgi%252F8xrPoFGWMPucW%252Bms%252F0%252Fg%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557#shpCntId[/ame] )

- as the BD is a 22 inch, not a more common 20.

The tom is 13, and the FT is a 15 (12 deep).

This kit has no badges and the wrap (if originally wrapped??) was removed and then it was painted black. It needs re-painting or re-wrapped. The FT feature the push button leg mounts, but only one has the bolt/button - not sure what parts are needed for the other 2.

First of all, can I get some confirmation that I have identified this correctly.

Next, do you happen to know the approximate value?

Lastly is the 15 FT. The mystery is that I was really bummed when I discovered snare beds! RRRRRRR!! I was so mad (though should not be entirely as I got a spankin' good deal on this kit.) This 12x15 FT is stamped Aug 65 and has an M stamped there as well - which seems to imply to me that it was a marching shell. But wait - there are no extra holes in this shell - none - for any strainer/butt. The only possibility is the holes that one of the leg mounts are using (lines up with the snare bed) - but then there are NONE on the other end/the other bed - nothing - not any filled or anything!???? Did Slingerland use a marching shell when assembling this kit? I confirmed that the Stage Band kit did indeed feature the 12x15 FT. If I recall the year is 1964.

Sizes are:

9x13 tom - 6 lugs

12x15 FT - 8 lugs

14x22 BD - 10 lugs

Thanks so much for your help. I hope your responses touch on everything I asked - as I need to learn as much as I can about this.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

They are no more rare than Ludwig clubdate kits, the floor tom may have been a field snare added to this kit. here look at mine. http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=39829 I have owned 3 stage band kits the other two had 14x14" floor toms, Just to add I am well aware the 12x15" is indeed a stage band size. does your 12x15" have any small extra holes in the shell? here is the pic link http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=61210

That's the thing - no extra holes at all on that FT shell. Steve Maxwell indicates that the larger sizes are rare (for this model with the single lugs) so I am wondering if the 13 and 22 are rare compared to the common 12/14/20 sizes. I would think that Steve would know his stuff, but am seeking confirmation from other 'experts'.

It would be easy to speculate that someone took a Marching/field drum and converted it to the FT, but there are no extra holes at all in this shell. Were there any models that included no FT - that were the 13/22 sizes?

Likewise, were there any marching drums, or rather 'field drums' that were sold with no snares on them sold as 'field drums' and not as snares - where the factory used the same snare shells (that already had the bed cut in them)?

Puzzling......

I am going to call Steve's store tomorrow and will report my findings here.

With Slingerland nothing is out of the world of possibility, The tom will sound fantastic, the snare beds will actually make the tom sing.

Last year I had a 12, 15, 22 Stage Band with the 15" exactly as you describe.

The "M" stamp should indicate that the FT was destined for a Natural Wood finish..

Cheers

Interesting. Is there a similar stamp on the other drums, or a different stamp?
