Slingerland Gene Krupa question

Loading...

I recently acquired a 5x14 Slingerland COB that I'm in the process of cleaning and restoring; it was very dirty but everything is in really great shape. I'm very excited about setting this thing up and using it, and will post pics when I'm done. It's an 8-lug model with a Zoomy that has the shell protector tab, and the extended-style butt plate. The badge style and serial number place this in the mid-70s somewhere, maybe 1975-1977.

I honestly think that it's never been played or owned. It has a faded store price tag on it ($195), the original Slingerland drum head with no stick marks, and it even has the original Slingerland warranty card rolled up and slid between a tension rod and the shell! There are no snares, and the snare head was a Remo Ambassador that showed no signs of wear.

My question is: are there any distinguishing features differentiating the Gene Krupa models from the standard Sound King models? Or, were the monikers based strictly on the years of manufacture?

Looking at the 73 catalog it says "Gene Krupa Sound King" and in the 76 catalog what appears to be the same illustration is simply the "Sound King".

Gene died in 1973 and they may have simply thought it to be in poor taste to continue to use his name on drums after that point.
