Slingerland faux leather finish

Loading...

Howdy folks, I'm new to this site and happy to be here.

My question concerns a finish that Slingerland offered for a short time that I think was called Cordovan. My brother Pat had a set in brown, and always referred to it as naughahyde(sp?). I've never seen another up close in person or in catalogs from the 70's though did come across two on ebay. Does anyone else know about this finish????

Thanx,

Dave Thomas

Hi Dave,If iam thinking on the right line as you Slingerland did this finish in the mid 70's [75=76] It was called Aztec it came in brown,yellow,red,white,green..All of these finish's are a so what rare to come by..Slingerland stop doing this finish in 1976 it was not a big seller...Mikey

No, Mikey, There was the fake leather Cordova wrap which was probably naugahyde. This was a common material during that time frame. The Aztec wraps were offered in the same period. Aztec had heiroglyphic patterns in the wrap. The wrap was probably some type of vinyl, but always looked like wallpaper to me.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I am familiar with the Aztec finishes, having seen them in the Slingerland catalogs available online. On ebay they were referred to as Cordova. I'm assuming the company also had a black version something like Ludwig's Panther finish. My brother's drums were ugly as all get out but sounded great.

He bought them at Zampino's in 1976, I believe. He tried to get some additional drums to expand the set a couple years later, but Slingerland had discontinued the finish.

The following pictures are scanned from Rob Cook's Slingerland book.

The Aztec photos are from page 138.

The Cordova photos are from page 140.

They may be made from the same material, But, they are quite different.

In the 70's I worked with the Australian "Pearl" distributor, we sold a lot of Pearl drums with this finish, but personally I hated the look, and it showed up every scratch.

Cheers

the aztec wrap is actually a cloth based wrap, not a vinyl wrap, In fact it wouldn't suprise me to find out it is some type of wall paper. I have a very nice example two blocks from my house. forum member Kevins has a beautiful set of them.

I saw some of those pleather Slingys languish on the floor of a Banjo Center for two years!!! They wanted $1300 at one point!!!!

I don't recall seeing too many Aztec or pleather Slingys around. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
