Slingerland Double tom holder question

Hi guys,

Does anyone know if Slingerland made a stand alone double tom holder (i.e., not mounted to the bass drum) that would accommodate the late 50's early 60's style toms (those that normally mounted on the Ray McKinley tom holder?).

I'm trying to put together a late 50's-early 60's double bass kit and looking for a tom mounting solution :).

Thanks,

James

James,

are you talking Diamond plates on the toms..as used by Gretsch also?

The "tom solution" for that time frame was to use both toms on a single rail consolette or two consolettes on the bass drum. The Slingerland Set-O-Matic tom hardware entered the picture in about 1968. Many drummers had Rogers Swivomatic hardware installed on their bass drums and mounted toms of all brands starting in the late 1950's. Look at Charlie Watts, Ringo, and many others. If you're looking for period-correct drum set configuration with "mounted" toms not on the bass drum, youre between the eras of the pre World War Two rolling rack and the Rogers, Slingerland, and Ludwig floor stands that came into popularity in the late 60's--early 70's. At least that's how it was back in Chicago in the period that you reference.

I just checked out the Slingerland book by Rob Cook. He pictures the ratcheting double tom holder that came out in 1960. I have had this same holder on some of my drum sets. the tom holder is made up from the tubes and ratchet from the Slingerland snare drum stand with a plate welded to the top that has two "ears" to fit into the diamond plates of the toms. It could be used at the top of a floor stand even though I never saw it used that way.

Thanks for the great information leedybdp. I somehow missed that in my copy of the book. And yes, I was indeed talking about the toms with the diamond plates :), blairndrums.

Thanks guys,

James

Just a quick note......The diamond plate on the toms for use with the rail consolette have the identical hole patter that is used for the diamond shaped mounting brackets for the Set-O-Matic hardware, Id using the double mount on the bass drum or floor stand, the toms do not need a larger center hole for the long rod to go in to. The double mount use two little short nubs that don't go inside of the toms.

Hey James!

Slingerland did have a double-tom floor stand in the early and mid 60's, which was the No. 176. It had the lower flush base stand from the No. 33 cymbal stand and the upper ratchet 171 tom holder. You can see it in this link from the Duet outfit.

Yep. that's what I was talking about even though I never saw it in a store or on from up close on a stage. I wonder how tippy that floor stand with two toms would be.

Yes.. You would need to lug a sandbag around for that stand..

Haha! Thanks guys! Don't really want to lug sandbags around ;), but might give it a try if I can come across one of these stands. I really appreciate your help!

Keep an eye out for the top section. I've seen them on eBay from time to time. I have a few spare lower sections!
