Slingerland? cymbal stands Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Loading...

Can anyone tell me if these stands are Slingerland? I don't see any markings on either that would indicate the manufacturer or place of manufacture. Notice that one of them has a press-on type top piece that goes over an untapped shaft - it also came with a Slingerland tilter, so both stands have one - and the other stand has a slightly larger diameter threaded top.

As always, any information is greatly appreciated!

The stands were sold by Slingerland 1930's to 40'ss.But the stands were Not made by S/L most likey made by W&A.W&A was a company that made many stands, tom mounts ete that they sold to S/L,Roger's,Ludwig companys just to name a few.The cymbal tilter could be a S/L but from the 60's but could also be a M.I.J. copy tilter.A better photo of the tilter apart will tell me more...Mikey

The bases on your stands look exactly like what came with the first set I ever bought, which was a 50's Gretsch. When I bought it (in 1970) it was supposed to have been "all original" (according to the original owner).

I'm not saying this to argue that your stands are Gretsch, just noting that what Mikey posted makes sense. Probably another company made this stuff for more than one company, which I think has always been more common than we realize.

In fact, IF I'm not mistaken, that was the whole premise of why "Taye" began making drums and stands -- they actually started off making stuff that was used and marketed by other drum companies, and they didn't market their own name until they were well established. I don't have any documentation to support that, but while I was researching something else I ran across that info somewhere...

Thanks to everyone for all of your responses. Anyone know about the "press-on" topper?

To address some specific comments:

I will try to post a pic of that tonight. It is very lightweight...probably aluminum for the main body with steel wing screws and such.

You are absolutely right! I can think of several companies, in various industries, that pretty much make an entire product and allow someone else to put one part (sometimes the part "makes" the product, sometimes not) and a logo on it and call it their product.

SL --

You're right about the "other industries" bit. With the last manufacturing job I had, we had a product that our company sold the exclusive rights to another company for a very large amount of money. One shift when I came in I had instructions that one whole department spent their entire efforts that night removing our printed name & logo from that particular product (that we still had in stock, a fairly recent run), then reprint it with the new company's name & logo to ship out to them!
