Slingerland Cutaway Project Last viewed: 6 minutes ago

Loading...

I saw these for sale on Craigslist and thought they would make a good project. I have been looking for some candidates for a Stars & Stripes/ Thin Blue Line themed set. The cutaways are an idea that pretty much flopped except for marching use, and so they are quite rare: no one bought ‘em!

Here are two of the four toms I got (10, 12, 13 and 14). These are typical of the condition, though. The chrome is dingy and the wrap is peeling and cracked. I got two Set-O-Matic clip-style stands with them.

I’ll show y’all the finished project when it is done.

Thanks everyone. I have another project ahead of the drums (building bedroom furniture), but that should be done in another few weeks.

John, I can’t guarantee that I’ll leave the badges off. They go with the whole kitsch of the rare drums! I think they’ll fit in a little better with my planned paint scheme.

Josh!

Completely forgot to mention those tom sizes of 10/12/13/14, which I think are ideal for drum set use! Here are some pictures of my BR 80N kit I had back in the very late 70's and early 80's. I purchased a set of concert toms in the same sizes, 10/12/13/14, and loved the fills I could do. That was a pretty big kit to schlep around to gigs...but I was young and it didn't bother me!!

Yep to the schlep.

Interesting way of setting up concert toms over on your right.

I might combine the cutaways with my Purecussion Rims bass drum for a true 70’s experience!

I have a 12-14-16 set of those in white. Doing a set for our Grandson with 24" bass 16" floor and a 15" concert tom in same wrap color. Will get some pics when it's finished. Only thing left is to add the SOM mounts. Have 2 SOM mounts on the stands. Bass, 4 mounted toms and a floor. All 70's vintage 5 ply.

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.
