Slingerland Cut-A-Way drums...
I have found a set of late 70's Slingerland Cut-A-Way drums. It is an 11 piece set in decent shape. Does anyone else own a set of these? How do they sound, they look very cool. Any info or photos would be great.
If you like LOUD drums buy them.I have a 1979 set called "POWER PLAY" its a 14x22 bass, mounted toms are 6",8",10",12",13",14",15",16" and a 16x18 floor tom.Finished in Black Chrome. The shells are 5 ply maple..I used to play them outside playing concerts back in the day..I have also used them a few times in the studio..But i have used the 6,8,10,12 toms more then the whole set..Mikey
I have always figured that these drum set drums happened by coincidence when single-headed toms were en vogue, and Slingerland had an overabundance of marching toms in inventory.
I played a trio of these with my Premier kit back in the day. They sound like concert toms. Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe just a tad less reso coming from them due to the missing wood, but pretty much the same stuff. Mine were the 5 ply variety and were a nice complement to my kit. Our church has a late 70s Mahogany finish kit in these ... beat all to heck. Shame.
Cut-A-Ways sound great when they are tuned properly; that is keeping the heads balanced by pitch at every tension rod. When tuned to their sweet spot, the fundamental tone and projection is amazing. They sound best with Remo Pinstripes IMHO. My set has 10-12-14-15-16 Toms with a 22" Bass and is from 1979-1980 time frame. Got it all apart now to reconfigure with ISO mounts and modern stands/hardware.

Those are rare drums in a set configuration. Weird Al's drummer Bermuda Schwarz has a big set of them and is very proud of them.
