Slingerland Cocktail Drum early 60s Or ???

Loading...

Bottom head says Slingerland "Genuine CALF" No badge, no hole, three pin grip legs, a cymbal mount, haven't cracked it open yet, no snare sound? 14 x 24 Gold multi-color sparkle, almost champagne, but not pink enough for my guess?

Can anyone help with ID? Why no air hole or badge? I don't understand the groove around the bottom?

The drum could be a Slingerland but it could be also a M.I.J. Star made drum.I can't see the rims that good in the photo also the leg mounts..Star drums were copys of Slingerland M.I.J.....Mikey

Ah yes, I'll never learn to provide good details so people can make good assessments. Bottom head imprint.

My best guess is late 1959-61..Yes its a Slingerland..Two things on the groove it could be that Slingerland cut the wrap wrong and butted to pieces together or it could by missing a chrome ring around the drum,do you see any small nile holes near the groove?....Mikey

My best guess is late 1959-61..Yes its a Slingerland..Two things on the groove it could be that Slingerland cut the wrap wrong and butted to pieces together or it could by missing a chrome ring around the drum,do you see any small nile holes near the groove?....Mikey

No nail holes, but it's definitely routed out, not just a split. Now that you mention it, a decorative inlay of some sort would make sense. It runs under the legs, so it's not something added later.

Still wondering why they didn't have an air hole or stamp their name. Maybe I need to take off the head again and look more carefully for the black stamp.

The calf head lead me to the early 60s guess. I remember how one my one I changed over heads in 1963 on marching drums. My Ludwigs from 1964 came with plastic. My first snare (used) in 1959 or 1960 had calfskin.

According to my search Chick Evans invented the first polyester film drum head in 1956.

As long as no one objects, I'll guess the bottom head is original and that makes the set Mid-50s? Hmmmm

What was Slingerland delivering on their drums in 1960? Or better question, when did they go to polyester film heads for new drums. That would date this nice end table for me.

Like Mikey, I also feel this is a late 50's to early 60's. The push-button legs were used from about 1958-1964. Also, to two-pad tone controls and calf heads still show in my '71 Slingerland catalog! As to the two-piece wrap job, I really feel that Slingerland cut the wrap incorrectly and simply did not want to waste the material. The two pieces were butted against each other, but time has opened up a nice separation between the seams... something we've all seen on Slingerland drums. Slingerland even makes note of the separation when ordering multicolor wraps!

Every cocktail drum from that era (very late '50s, early '60s) had that space between the two pieces of wrap. I think when they were sent out, the space was thinner, but over time those wraps shrink.

That's a nice original condition champagne sparkle drum.

I think around that time Slingerland sent out drums with calf or plastic heads.

I have a bass drum head that is original to a '61 drum that says "Genuine Calf" and it's plastic.

Thanks for all the answers. I measured, sure enough, 20" is the limit. They just stopped and added a strip to make up the rest.

All I need to make the snare work is the screw, lock washer and a nut, and then a knurled thumb screw or knob. I kind of expected to find parts, inside the drum. Nothing. So someone "cleaned" it and removed the rattles.

Still looking for the invisible vent, any badge or Mfg. ID? The feet and the bottom head, which really is calf BTW, and the answers here have me convinced it's Slingerland. Just mystified by no markings. What were they, the secret drum company?

I hope this doesn't offend anyone but it's making a dandy night stand right now. LoLoLoLo

Hey I could furnish my whole living room with drums as everything except the chairs and couch. TV stands, end tables, coffee table. Hmmm ???
