Slingerland COB snare -- what do I have here?? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Feeling some financial pressure, so planning to sell off some stuff. Somehow I have THREE vintage Slingerland snare drums.

This snare I bought pretty much as a project, actually combining the best parts from two of them for the best snare.

I started to list on ebay then realized... I don't even know what it is. I know Slingerland, COB, Zoomatic, ...that's about it. Duh.

What model do I have here?? I'm confused when I search the catalogs because there is a lot of similarity among various models.

Help, please??

Any of the thumbnails will take you to the album, if that helps...

Thanks....

Looks like a good ol' 3 lined Sound King or could be a Super Sound King.

Depending on the serial number as to the date it may be what was called a Gene Krupa Sound King.

If the serial number puts in the 60's I'm guessing it's a Krupa version, not sure when Slingerland dropped the Krupa designation of the Sound King Line.

But I'll defer to our experts here when they weigh in.

By the S/N, I'm thinking it's mid-70s. By then, the GK model had been dropped. The Super Sound King had a dual "Super" strainer that resembled a Super Sensitive Ludwig. So, this is a Sound King. The nicer ones, which yours appears to be, bring $200-250 fairly regularly on feeBay.

I just got a mid-60s with the original heads for $150 shipped. It's real clean, but had a few dents that I was able to "massage" out pretty easily.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Thanks for the info -- and it does help.

Question, though -- other than the name change -- maybe the GK didn't command that much attention by then -- is there really any difference between the Krupa and the Sound King?

I was under the impression the "Gene Krupa Sound King" and "Sound King" are the same exact drum. They just dropped Gene's name from it. Perhaps after he passed there was no longer endorsment rights or something along that nature.

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Jeez.. I didn't realize it was after he passed. I thought that his name didn't have as much appeal.

I regret having said that because he remains among my favorite drummers. A great player who never forgot the audience.

I appreciate the info...they do look the same to me.

I mentioned I used two drums to pick the best parts from each. I just looked for the badge from the other shell. Nowhere around in my projects-everywhere-basement... which looks like an ad for adult attention deficit!
