Slingerland BD question

Loading...

I have what I believe is a 60s Slingerland 18" BD (clear maple interior.) There is no badge, as a setomatic mount has been fitted where the vent used to be. If the mount is removed you can see where the badge has marked the wrap. The drum is wrapped in red glass glitter and is stamped with at 'P' on the inside of the shell.

Anyway - what I am confused about is 4 holes which have been filled at the bottom of the drum (see pic.) Has anyone seen anything like this before or what they might be for?

Thanks!

Could have been where a handle was mounted. The Cocktail Outfit in the 60's catalogs (http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/slingerland_drumsets.html) shows a handle on the BD. However, the catalog shows only a 16" BD was offered. Doesn't mean someone didn't add one or custom order it that way. That would be my guess.

I see. That could be it. The holes are under the drum (facing the floor) which would be a strange place to put a handle, but the spacing does look about right. Thanks a lot for your help.

One other possible option.. The "Jet kit" was offered with an 18" BD. It also came with metal "Beater Saver" hoops. The pedal was attached via a spring clip to a hinged tab on the batter hoop. The weakest link was the hinged tab welded to the batter hoop. These were known to break off.. (happened to me)

So maybe some sort of plate was screwed to the shell to attach a pedal.

Just a thought..

Cheers

Thanks longjohn. I did wonder if this was a converted Jet BD, especially as the badge/vent hole is in the middle of the drum (now covered by setomatic bracket) and there are no signs of any holes where a rail mount might have been. Also, the T rods are 70s style and the inlay on the hoops is a sparkle (the drum is a glass glitter.)

However, the filled holes are at the front of the drum, logo head side (again, no holes where the leg brackets might have been moved) which leads me to think they aren't related to a pedal attachment.

Sorry, I realise none of this is clear from the picture I uploaded - couldn't seem to upload more than one image to my post.

Anyway, I'd be grateful for any more theories as to what the mystery holes were for!

Cheers

Four holes that close together and symmetrical, I'm betting it was some sort of holder for carrying the bass drum as a marcher offset.

Thanks. Yes, that may be it. Strange that they wouldn't be in the center of the drum though?
