Slingerland 10-lug Artist Snare

Man Tommy those are nice!! I dig the stick chopper hoops. Classic Buddy for sure. I put a pair of SC hoops on my RK snare. Although not correct in my case they are fun to play. :)

THANKS!... glad you enjoyed! Classic Buddy indeed! BR preferred StickChoppers, and Slingerland was only too happy to accomodate! The Slingerland 4X14 Buddy Rich was cataloged WITH StickChoppers as that is how the drum was conceived/built. Later on during production they switched to StickSavers as it seems most guys didn't like the StickChoppers... then. Now... whole different story! There seem to be just as many of these with StickSavers as with StickChoppers... maybe more. I like them myself. They have a real neat "feel" to them. The small pile of sawdust that collects under the snare drum is an added bonus! Cool on your RK! Of note...

...both these 4X14 BR's have factory StickChoppers and NO tone controls. EXACTLY as Buddy played his. That coupled with the fact that they have the early black/gold badge makes these kinda rare. Most all of these have the LATER silver/black Slingerland badge and tone controls.

TommyP and Glen: Thanks for all the feedback and advice! I ended up picking this one up earlier this evening. It's a 10-lug Artist model with what I believe to be a solid shell. Am I correct? I'm not sure if it's going to be a "keeper" or if I'm going to use it as "trade bait" sometime down the road.

Gary!

What a BEAUTY!!... and yes, it is indeed a solid shell 10 lug Artist. You don't see many of these at all. Badge style is 1962 at the earliest. Hmmm... don't you have a Light Blue Pearl set of Slingerland's? Or are they Sky Blue Pearl Ludwigs? Could be a keeper regardless. Nice find!

Thanks for the positive feedback, Tommy. I really do like the looks of this one. It's actually the first 10 lug Artist I've seen in these parts. And, you're correct. I do have a set of Sky Blue Pearl Ludwigs. The wrap on this snare is a perfect match for them despite the fact that I've already got the matching Jazz Festival.

THANKS AGAIN for all of the information you provided. It certainly helped me in making the decision to grab this one.

OS that's a beauty. The LBP wrap color is stunning too!! Like no fade at all. Amazing! BTW I have a LBP Slingy kit that would go well with. LoLoLoLo

Nice score and enjoy the snare.

Thanks, Glen. The gentleman I purchased it from (not a drummer) was selling it for his good friend. He told me that the friend bought the drum new (he actually gave me the plastic bag it originally came in), played it several times and then just put it on a shelf in his home. It had its share of dust on it when I got it but I gave it a little coat of Meguiar's Color X and am extremely happy with the results. Perhaps we should consider mating this one up with its other "family members" (lol)!

Gary!

Gotta tell ya... that is the ONLY ONE I have ever seen. I suspect that Slingerland just didn't build all that many in the 10 lug configuration. The 8 lug "Artist" sold BIG though... but the 10 lug is sumthin' else! Condition on your drum is absolutely killer. Hmmmm... you do have the SBP Ludwigs w/Jazzfest, so yeah... perhaps that drum will make it's way east to reside with Glen's Slingerland's! Either way... NICE drum!!

Gary, that would be a very sweet one to have! I just have too many irons in the fire right now. But thank you! That's a rare one and you'll get a very good price for it I feel. I would defer to Tommy's expertise advise. I hope you keep it a bit and see how you like it. Solid shell Slingerland snares have a great sound. Enjoy and thanks for the pics it's been a real treat to see this!!
