Is there a badge or date stamp on your? I have a Lyon & Healy bass drum I have been looking for badges for years. I'm guessing these were economy snares. Or maybe from a Carousel organ.. I bought mine for $10. The seller thought half of it was missing. lol
Most of the "economical" snares were made with one head for traveling drummers. It was also made to conserve space so they could pack other instruments inside the snare (triangle, ratchet, tambourine, etc). They cost less and were easy to travel with.
Interestingly enough, L&H also made banjos, while the single head style snare incorporated the snare strainer system on the inside of the drum (with a little different material used for the head) and they utilized the same frame, hardware for banjo bodies. If you look up L&H history you will see these drums and banjos with the same construction except made with a nickle over brass hoop.
The dual head L&H snares I have in my collection have a paper tag on the inside of them. L&H also made drums that were sold under the Oliver Ditson tag. They manufactured drums and a variety of other instruments in Chicago but were mainly known for making harps as time went on.
Most of my research for identification of "one-off" snares like this that don't have a tag were through Not So Modern Drummer and Rhythm Discovery Center, The Boston Drum Builders Blog.
You got a great price on this piece of history as there are not a lot of them around. Took me a while to find mine and I paid a fair amount more but It is really a piece of history and one of the older drums in my collection.
I hope this helps some.
Michael
