Silver Dots vs Black Dots on Bonham Reissue

Hi guys,

Well, after 8 yrs I finally decided to switch out the heads on my reissue "Zep Set" - Ludwig Amber Vistalite in Bonham sizes. I bought the kit in 2009 and it came out of the boxes with Ludwig Silver dots. To be honest, I had never been really happy with the sound of the kit. The bass drum sounded fantastic, but the toms were always a bit too lively and "hard" sounding for my taste. So I decided to give the Remo CS black dot heads a try and boy, they really made a difference to my ear. They sound far warmer and rounder. The CS black dot heads also feel thicker than the silver dots and I think this helps control the overtones a bit. Anyway, curious about any one else's experiences with silver dots vs remo black dots (on any size kit). Thanks!

I've used both and found the same thing you did. The Black Dots are slightly "warmer" sounding. I believe it is due to the dot being thicker on the Remo heads vs the Ludwig silver dot heads.
