Should I buy mid 50's WFL Bass Drum $200 plus postage? Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Hey guys,

I'm quite new here and I was wondering if you could help me out.

This will be my first vintage drum purchase and I want to make it good :)

I've found a mid 1950's, WFL, White marine pearl, three ply, 14 x 22 bass drum shell and badge. Should I get it? It's $200 and I'd have to pay shipping to Australia which is about $100 - $150 :/ also I've looked up replacement hardware which would come to about $150 :o the hardwares all new and isn't really correct to the drum (slingerland lugs, clip on spurs and solid maple hoops) but it should be okay. I'm not making a collectors kit yet, this will be my third drum purchase

Any advice from anyone would be great.

Thanks

Seb

P.S. I'll post the one photo I have of it later on today

For that price brother I would wait especially if the shell has been drilled for Sling lugs. Just my thought. Post in the wanted section I believe people have this stuff here.

Amen. That's a lot of cake to spend on an altered shell. Plenty of 'complete' good ones to be had for one or two hundred more than that bare, altered one.

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks for your responses guys :)

Sorry to be confusing in my first post, but the shell hasn't been redrilled. All the original holes are there, only for lugs and one gretsch cymbal holder. No spur holes or anything else! Sorry :)

I'm only looking and slingerland lugs because their screw spacings are the same, as far as I can tell

Thanks

Screw spacing is NOT the same......

They did that for a reason.........so you wouldn't put Slingerland lugs on a Ludwig shell, and call it a Slingerland!

Right :/ see, this is my first experience in vintage drums :) the screw spacing is 2 and 1/4" if that helps

I've just asked for any drums on the 'wanted to buy' forum, so maybe that'll be better :)

Thanks

Hi Seb, At 350.00 for a drum not complete is way over priced.Iam not sure what parts are missing if the lugs are missing on the drum that a bad deal for just the shell without lugs.If the lugs are missing Slingerland lugs will not work on Ludwig holes you would have to redrill one hole to make the lugs work. You are off on the pricing of the parts you would need 20 lugs they sell from 40.00 to 60.00 for 20 of them .You would need 20 claws and 20 t-rods they sell from 60.00-80.00 per a set of 10 total of 120.00 to 160.00..Hoop's sell from 40.00-50.00 each used spurs are from 40.00 to 60.00 used..Heads about 60.00 new so you can see the cost of the used Ludwig parts on top of the shell cost,,Like i said a bad deal.Wait for a complete Ludwig bass drum to come along....Mikey

Hi everyone,

To be honest, this is what I was loking for; smarter people than me guiding me in the right direction! :)

Thank you all for your help, I have asked in the 'Wanted' forum for any loose drums so if you want to check that out? http://vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?p=220133

Thanks again,

Seb
