Screw Sizing Help!!!

Loading...

Hey Guys,

I'm working with some old 60's 3 ply MIJs and I'm going to need to order some lug screws. All the screws I currently have are too long. Was checking with drum factory direct and their screws for 5 to 8 ply are 9mm, but what size should I use for 3 ply? Anybody know?

Thanks!

Phil

I would go 5 to 7 mm and use a washer!

You can use a Dremel with a small cutoff wheel to shorten the screws you have. I have done this quite a few times. Does NOT mangle the threads if done correctly. Walking

I do have a witless comment for this thread, but I shan't...

Yep, use a Dremel tool to cut 'em down to size. Mind the threads while doing the cutting.

Yes , easy on the threads. That white metal in the lugs and hardware can't take much abuse and there isn't much material there to upsize.

If you are going to be doing this kind of thing more than once , I would pick up a cheap set of taps and dies, in the smaller sizes, both metric and s.a.e.Chrome-vanadium steel ones are quite decent and are cheap. While they are , not great for repeated cutting of original threads, in hard steel, they are fine for cleaning up burrs ,slightly stripped areas, and most damage and they can do hundreds of threads in/on the soft metal that most of the MIJ drums came with. They are great for chasing existing threads , though , and will save you some headaches ,down the line.

Most of the MIJ drums did not use lock washers on the screws----that's why they become easily loose. It is good preventive medicine and they take up a bit of extra length.

your lugs are on the way, Phil. those ones did have lock washers.
