Said Goodbye to my Dad today... just some cathartic sharing.

Dad was the reason I play drums.... he was raised on Gene Krupa. Dad had a great left hand and always played with a smile on his face.

He always let me stay up late... even on school nights... :) if Buddy Rich was going to be on Carson.

He played in a dance band before leaving for WWII but when he came home he became a pastor and didn't pick the sticks up seriously again.

His hand... is... was... and always be on my shoulder when I play. D' Drummer.

This forum prompted a fun adventure for me and dad to Chicago to pick up a $90 ebay kit (purchased on the solid advice of the forum member Roscoe) turned out to be blue sparkle Krupa Deluxe Ensemble that was covered in contact paper... :)

Attached a picture of my Dad's kit. :)

Sorry to hear about your dad. My dad passed on just over 20 years ago, he was also in WW11. He loved the songs, Yellow Submarine and Give Ireland Back to the Irish. He was a proud Irishman and never once discouraged me from playing the drums. I really miss him.

Btw, both of those kits look great.

It sure seems that there was and is a musical household there, what with the drums, sax, guitar cases, piano and old time radio. I'd guess he must have taught you, 'When the Roll is Called up Yonder' with it's marching cadence. Perfect song for using his kit.

I'm so very sorry to hear of your loss, Jim. We have similar stories. My dad is also a veteran of WW2. He had an old Leedy snare which I claimed and somehow learned to keep a beat with. My dad is now residing in a nursing home. Some days, he recognizes me.
