Rogers XP8 Birdseye maple?!

I'm working on this Rogers XP8 kit. The wrap is cracked beyond repair, so I'm removing it with the intent to re-wrap. I was cleaning the interior of the bass drum shell when I noticed, it was BIRDS EYE maple!! Are you kidding me?!

So now I'm wondering,

What are the odds that under the 30yr old glue and grey paint, that the exterior of the shell would be the same??

Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

I was under the impression that these were among the earliest all maple drums. So I would say chances are pretty good.

I am a bit confused. Was grey paint on interior? XP8 had clear interiors. You mention a bad cracked wrap, so where is exterior grey paint coming from? Was it painted and then wrapped? Exterior of wrapped shell will usually show ply edges, but might still might match the interior plys / maple.

I don't see gray paint-I see preliminary sanding marks that are gray against the dark glue. USUALLY covered or painted drums have a "B"grade exterior ply, so you may be disappointed after all that sanding. If not, great! If so,look into a nice exterior maple veneer. Those Big R's are great drums-

Yes, Tom is correct. What ever you do, you will end up with some awsome drums. I had a set with cracked wraps also. After reading up and finding out the sells were 8 ply maple I got excited and was sure I would stain and lacquer the shells. Well, I was dissapointed to find that the shells had several side and butt joints showing plus they were inconsistent in color. I decided to wrap in veneer and was very happy with the results. YOu look like you have a ton of adhesive to remove but I say do it on a small drum and see what you have, we could be wrong. If the shell is not suitable for stain then I like the veneer idea but a delmar wrap would be OK also. Good luck with them and keep us up to date. You have some drums that are worth the time and money to restore. I love mine, they sound soooooooooooo good!

Thank you!

Sorry for the confusion, the interiors are clear. The exteriors have grey paint, then glue on top of that. The wrap was cracked like puzzle, and practically falling off.

I did a lot of searching but couldn't find out any info on why Rogers would paint the exterior grey, THEN wrap it...?? I understand the "B" grade thing, but it just seems like a waste of time and money.

At this point I'm just curious if they painted over birdseye on the exterior too.

I'm not sure how well or how much I could get rid of that grey paint, I'll try a small spot and see if it's worth all the time.

Jccabinets, your work is amazing! I may end up turning these over to you, if you have the time and I have the money, haha.

Thanks guys!
