Rogers XP10 Snare--crackle finish? Last viewed: 10 hours ago

From The Ploughman

Nope. Typical for an unchromed brass grommet. I have a few drums that look identical in that area. And I will bet a ten spot it is paint. Any takers?

I don't think I'd bet against you on an XP topic John, but if it is paint, I don't think it was an effect. It could be paint that has been rejected by the laquer finish; but those badges are stick on and it looks pretty settled on the shell to me. You saying that badge has been removed? I still think it's the finish falling off, myself. The thing I'm not sure about was if those drums were finished in nitro or poly. Poly doesn't really do that. Nitro does.

I believe from the pic of the badge close up, the finish is above the badge. My gut instinct is that the badge was masked off, hardware removed and one of the foo foo crackle finishes was applied to the shell. The badge appears to me to be lower than the finish. I believe the original color is showing in the cracks. At 200, I would risk this drum, providing it is unmal ested as to the edges. If you could remove that crap finish, I think a good spray guy could do a lacquer coat that would fool anyone. You would have a restored drum. Not the same as original, but close. Soundwise, ............ it would make you smile.

Looks like it could be 'California Wine' lacquer, ruined from heat and/or cold. Or a respray that suffered a similar fate. Not very valuable. I'd say around $300 tops, for someone who wanted a project. But that 8" size makes it more undesirable.

Rogers Superten 114706.

Condition: Like it left the factory. Exceptions.... does not have original heads.

This drum is absolutely perfect. Probably built a day after the one you posted in this thread.
