6.5x14 Wildwood Dynasonic, Serial #12237

Not only is this drum a rare 6.5, but it is also a Wildwood shell. Wildwood was created by injecting dye into trees, thereby creating striations of color in the wood. Fender originally used this method for their Coronado guitars, and then applied the concept to Rogers. The color was not a popular choice for Fender or Rogers, so the process was discontinued and few drums were built. Over time, the dye used in the process had a tendency to fade. When authenticating this drum, sources employed at Rogers during this era indicated that no wood dynas in this finish were built for stock. They were done on a special order basis only. In addition, the rare 6.5? size indicates that this drum may in fact be unique.

The drum currently on eBay is NOT Wildwood. On first look I didn't think it was either based on the fact that there isn't enough of the "streaking" that the process creates.. then .. a read of the copy backs that: It was originally a wrapped drum, but the original owner removed said wrap and finished it NATURAL. Looks like a real nice job too, and lucky him, as not all "wrap grade" exterior plies will look that nice cleared. All in all a fine specimen for one that has been "modified". Again... NOT Wildwood.

Yes, Tommy is the man, but like the seller says, he has considered that in the offering price. it may be a nice deal. because the drum you speak of may be offered at 2-3 times this amount

Now Jim... I thought that there was a little more to my vintage drum knowledge other than just the fact that "I can read"... but THANKS regardless!... I think. That said, I must reiterate: Even before I read the copy, I knew it wasn't Wildwood, and if it WAS being represented as Wildwood, it would have been a scam. Fortunately, that is not the case! That is one SUPER CLEAN Dynasonic though, regardless of the refinish. Certainly rare/desirable model for sure.

I always look forward to seeing you jump in on a thread. Some of the old guard seems to have cut back on the visits... glad the Rogers expert is still a regular.

I think its a nice drum but would not buy it. Theres nothing saying you couldnt just buy a shell and add Dyna hardware to it. No proof it was ever a wooden dyna in its past. All the things associated with it being a repop are the same as a refin {yes you can purchase 3 ply w/ 3 ply rering maple shells}. Gromet, badge, nails, and clear coat, would have all been tampered with. I would rather just build a clone for a fraction.

True enough!, and personally... I generally avoid vintage drums that have been "modified"... and this one certainly has. As to it's EXACT origin... who knows. Nicely done regardless, as I think we all agree!
