Rogers Red Onyx kit--Should I?

Loading...

Any help from Rogers guys on sizing up these drums would be greatly appreciated. I've never owned a Rogers kit, although my Dynasonic is one of my favorite snares. I see rims, T-rods, and claws missing. Anything else of note? Fair offer for it would be?

Currently playing for loud rock and roll gigs:
1982 Ludwig Classic in white Cortex, 24-13-14-18 + Coliseum snare
For quieter gigs:
Early '70s Whitehall Tiger Eye Pearl 20-12-14-14
Neglected but thinking about:
Early '70s Sonor Champions in Rosewood, 22-12-13-16

The ? is : what era are the tags inside the belly of the beast? Looks early 70's, possibly late 60's. Difference between the two is large enough to matter even though construction is t/ same (sad, but true, t/ t/ little paper tags carry so much weight).

Missing parts add up fast, so do a little digging on w/'s missing & do some math. Is the wrap cracking? Very common w/ onyx -

It has the leanning back badge,..59/62 !! Nice color and good condition,..I`d get `em !!

If ploughman replies,..listen to him !!

Those look well kept and they may have the removed hardware !!

OddBall, you speak truth about The Ploughman. He recently helped me suss out some issues with a different Rogers snare.

Assuming no split wrap (since I haven't seen any in the pix) and only the missing hardware noted, what's fair if they're 59/62-era drums? $400-500? More, less?

Definitely not 59/62 era drums. Spec int, b/t lugs, etc etc etc. Much later than 59/62 era.

Those are late 60's Rogers. They have the later speckled grey interiors, later t's and claws, nothing unusual about them. Script badges started in around 1959-60.

As long as there are no cracks in the wrap, you're good to go. Missing around $100-150 worth of parts. The bottom edges of the toms look ok even though they have been exposed....

If you can get them for $600 or less you're ok...

By the way, the toms are reversed; looks like the 13" is on the drummer's left and the 12" is on the drummer's right.

Communication with the out-of-town seller continues to be at a snail's pace, but here's the last bit:

"Rogers Holiday drum set, red onyx.

Serial number 20561

Approx 1961-1968

12" and 13" toms

16" floor tom

20" bass"

No labels, he says. So I asked where he got the serial number from. Waiting to hear back, but will probably check these out when I can. Any other questions I should ask before I go?

Thanks again, all.

Unless he plays left handed. Snare & floor tom placement on other side as well.

Dan's time line looks good, and he should know. FYI - Looks like Red Onyx first offered 1964 catalog, but the floor tom mounts changed around 72.
