Thanks guys,

The seller told me the drums were sold.

Pure coincidence but on the same website, this is on offer.

I'm sure that's what we were looking at,... "SAKEA Rythm King".

Apparently,... 1960's pre Yamaha.

I'm sure Osaka Bob could tell us more.

Hi All,

I bought a MIJ Sakae WMP snare a couple of years ago. The shell, wires and strainer are typical stencil quality but the lugs are rather hefty and hoops are SOLID die cast, quite heavy and pretty cool.

I decided to experiment to see how good I could make a MIJ snare sound and with best updating how it could compare to some of my "real" snares. I own a wide range of snares - higher end Sonor, Rogers Dynasonic, Ludwig, Fibes, Tama, Yamaha, Pearl, custom bubinga stave shells, etc. - and have refurbished/modified quite a few drums in my time.

I have polished the hardware and cleaned the wrap. It now looks pretty good except for some pitting and scratching on the chrome. I've applied ten coats of 100% pure tung oil to the interior of the shell using 0000 steel wool in between each coat. The original bearing edges really sucked so I've table sanded them to make them even. Unfortunately, I got a little side-tracked with other projects and life issues at that point. I hope to continue this project soon and recut the bearing edges to 45 degrees. When I finish this updating I'll report to you all what I find about how much better it sounds (hopefully) than a typical stencil and how it compares to my other snares.
