Rogers BigR: is it a Londoner 5? Date & Value?

Loading...

Hello dear people!

I tried to gather as much information as possible on the drums (3 toms and bass-drum; I am afraid, I forgot to check the sizes) I found in some friends' cellar, they could be quite nice, I think.

Facts and questions:
Big R six digit "D" badge: in the 700 000s, according to the ploughman's guide it should be between 1976-1978.

5-ply shells, the catalogue scans tell, it is "hardwood". Can you tell, which wood they are made of exactly?

interior colouring is grey-speckled. Outer orange finish - I did not find further information on this. Do you know?

Tom holder is triangular-shaped on top.
It would be great to know, if you have any more detailed information on this set. Please see the pictures also. Any idea on the possible value of the drums would be appreciated also!

Thank you, Le Phaniac

Hi Le,

These are good drums..

5ply maple shells..mid 70s drums..strong hardware..

Most likely a 22"bass 16" Flr Tom and 12/13 rack toms..

As for the Color, ? Spanish gold or savanna ..? Sorry I can't remember.

If it's just the drums with basic hardware...no stds / cymbals or snare..

If everything is in good shape, I.e. No extra holes, all original & the hoops, lugs have good Chrome..value would be $350/$500.

If the floor Tom is a 14" or 18" the value would be higher ..

Best of luck..

This is a great Rock n roll kit...

Thanks for your answer!

So would you say this one was sold as a "Londoner 5"?

From the catalogues I can just guess, if the L5 was sold in metallic-gold (that is the official name I suppose).

That set was most likely sold as a Londoner 5 originally. May well have had a COB Dynasonic from the factory. That is Spanish gold and looks to be in good shape. The shells are actually 5 ply maple/birch (all Rogers shells were maple/birch up to the XP8s) and they are fantastic drums. They are equal to or better than the earlier script badge Rogers but they don't yet grab the same amount of money so they are a great bargain.

Hey people, thank you so much for your answers! It's been really helpful, I am glad I stumbled upon such a gem..

Should I rename the thread somehow - so people trying to identify their sets could find (and use) this information more easily?

Thanks again!

From Jazzycat1

These are not Spanish Gold - Spanish gold is bright yellow like a school bus.

These were called Metallic Gold, even though they are more orange in color.

This is similar to the various "mist" wraps of that era that are prone to cracking so these look to be in great condition.
