Yeah, I'm astonished reading these forums that Big R's aren't really regarded that highly. Not to blow my own trumpet, but I think mine would be one of the more prized R's purely because of the rarity of the finish. Not sure wether it's a shame that they don't get the praise they deserve or a bonus little secret cheap amazing vintage drum club I belong to haha.

I have a 1977 Big R 4 ply kit and they sound amazing. I don't think folks here look down on them, just prefer the script badge era as more collectable. I have a boring wrap on mine and the floor tom wrap split diagonally on one side. I would love to maybe one day rewrap them in something nice. They are great drums.

Very,very nice. Question for the pro's-are all non-rering American big R's XP-8's?

Nice kit and welcome to the VDF. I have a big"R" kit (5ply with re-rings) and I love em, amazing tone.

XP8's have clean interiors.

XP8 era drums were produced from 1979-1984. Drums are eight ply all North American Maple plies, without reinforcement rings. Shells were produced by keller, and were ordered for both wraps and lacquer finishes. Interiors were clear finished, some show a very thin coat of a lacquer sealer, while others appear to have been waxed.

These are excellent quality drums. Even today they are as good or better than anything available in the upper midrange market. High end production drums have had great advancements in the quality and detail of finish over the past 30 years, raising the bar for what is high end. Rogers XP8 is a great example of high end drums from that time period.

Yes, I am biased.

I have three XP8 period sets. And, nearly a dozen or so XP8 period snares.
