Roadshow Cymbal Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Saw this gal on Antiques Roadshow, in the "Feedback Booth". I have never seen a platter this big. She said the appraisers said, "It's the biggest cymbal we have ever seen and is most likely from the late '50's/early '60's". It appraised for between $1,600 and $2,000. I apologize for the lousy cellphone pic and tele-lines. Thought it was interesting. The bell seemed like a normal bell for a smaller (20 - 22") cymbal. Huuuge!!

Love the "Roadshow".

AZBill, what size was the cymbal you're talking about?

I recently found this pic of one which is supposed to be made from brass, MS63 and is a 32".

Olimpass, unfortunately, she didn't say. It looks to be something well over 24", judging from the gals arm-span and how her hands are on the cymbal edges. No markings could be seen in the quick clip. It just looked so damn huge. Almost comical.

Hey I just became aware of this thread- my mother-in-law saw it somehow.

The cymbal on ARS belongs to me and it is an A. Zildjian, 30" in diameter. I've owned it since the early 90's. Got it from an ex-drummer that acquired it in the late 70's - from where I'm not sure.

It's got the Zildjian stamp but no ink markings. The bell is disporportionately small considering the size, and the sound of the cymbal is quite musical with the response and articulation of a medium ride. The overtone lasts for almost two minutes if struck hard!

My feeling is that the cymbal was made in the late 60's, early 70's. A friend of mine asked a rep at Zildjian about it once and the rep wasn't aware of any cymbals of that size specifically but said that Zildjian used to make some large rides for the drummers of Stan Kenton's big band.

The ARS appraiser told my wife that he couldn't think of an application for it except maybe the circus- which doesn't seem too far fetched.

Anyway I thought I'd let you know what I know. Would love to hear any lore pertaining to 30" ride cymbals.

Cheers,

PA

Welcome to the forum! Post a pic of the trademark stamp and overall shots if you don't mind. VDF member Drumaholic can tell you the date and possibly more about it. He also owns a 30" cymbal.

30" cymbal? Wow. Pretty cool.

Thanks for the back story on that behemoth.
