Rick Nielsen American Pickers.... Last viewed: 4 hours ago

From Kona

I'll look for the episode - thanks for the post.I've said this before....I like watching the show but it drives me crazy when Mke is crawling over/past what appears to be a vintage drum...to grab an oil can haha. But I do watch the show when I can.One thing that I think about is this. Do Forum members search out some of the places Pickers have shown on TV? I think if Canadian Pickers (Scott and Sheldon) were in my neighbourhood and passed over some interesting boxes/drums I would be contacting the land owner and trying to set up a visit. Has anyone here ever done that after watching American Pickers? Some of those places they've been to look like so much fun to just go have a look.

My good friend and I picked a storage space that was on American Pickers in Staten Island. We didn't find any musical instruments but we grabbed a few speakers. It was an enormous space and was filled to the brim with antiques and interesting items. I could have spent a few days looking through everything. Apparently the owner was in old age and hired a women to sell off most of the collection. If you've ever seen the episode where Mike walks over the tops of a cluster of movie theater seats, then you know which space I am referring to.

While some of American Pickers is real, I would be willing to bet that a large portion of the show is fake or set up. The people they pick from are almost certainly being paid to be on the show in addition to any money they receive for items. I would also venture to say that many, if not all, of the "freestyle picks" are set up ahead of time. It is also much easier to understand how they move on from these "honey holes" when you consider that they are being paid by the History Channel to film a television show. I'm sure that picking for interesting items isn't really their most profitable source of income at this point, and there is only so much time in day.

If you want to see the magnitude of Cheap Trick's talent, get the DVD of them performing Sgt. Pepper's live. It's cheap on Amazon, and hopefully our friend BEC will benefit from the proceeds.

American Pickers is a great show, although I don't watch much TV. I especially like it when they find older motorcycles and building fixtures.

I have a couple of friends, who actually work , producing reality T.V. This is for large companies, that have branches----called things like "factual television", etc. The big thing that is selling in television, right now, is sub-cultures. Television viewers are absolutely lustfull for the inside snoop on how other people live.---------some weird competition thing I guess and what's more , they are totally gullible, and the T.V. companies know it. ...anyway; it's all pretty much fake. The basic settup isn't, in some cases but the eventual edited story is sculpted for entertainment value. Some of them( Breaking Amish, for instance) are completely fake. Even the news, is fake anymore. Most of it is compiled, sieved and edited to suit a chosen perspective.

Yes - these shows are 'story boarded'

A local collectible shop owner was approached by a Canadian Pickers scout a year or so ago. The owner eventually turned the show down. He spoke to me about it and he said it was just 'too fake' for his liking. What he meant by that was they wanted him to pretend his shop was in a different location and they would have it all 'story boarded'. He didn't feel comfortable with that. Personally I think he lost some good local advertising and who cares if it's 'story boarded' - I think it would be kind of fun. Who knows....mayber a tv/movie scout would see him/her and say "that's the face and character we're looking for!" Most likely not though;)

I like the show but that one guy drives me crazy with his 1980's phrases. "Large and in charge", "That's totally rad", "I'm stoked", etc., etc. And I agree....most of these "reality" shows are set up ahead of time.

Cool show, but it's no Antiques Roadshow (PBS). It's cool to see old instruments on these shows.

A hit "reality" show is very profitable. That idiot 'Chumlee' on Pawn Stars gets paid $25,000.00 per episode!

Never play it the same way once.

I'm glad that many (most) others also believe that these "reality" shows are far from reality. Story boards, camera crews, directors. etc. Pawn Stars...a disfunctional family with a worthless employee! I quit watching it after a couple of episodes. Did anyone else see the short-lived Picker Sisters? I enjoyed that just because of the "eye-candy" (Tanya & Tracy)!

Bought their poster off the net for $69.00 (shipping included) and have it hanging in my drum room!
