Resonance from Club Date mounted tom Last viewed: 2 days ago

Loading...

I just purchased a 66' Club Date and I am absolutely in love with it! I am having one minor issue with obtaining maximum resonance from the rack tom. The 12" tom will be nice and resonant when tuned off of the mount on the bass drum, but the tone chokes once the drum is attached to the mount. Is there any tricks to obtaining better resonance from the rack tom using the bass mount? I am assuming that the tom mount is absorbing the vibration from the drum, hence choking the natural resonance.. I do get a little better resonance by using a snare stand with the tom, but I prefer the look and location of the tom when on the mount.

Any ideas? Thanks for your replies

Get a RIMS type mount. The aluminum Gauger would probably be best. No mods needed.

Move the drum into different positions on the l-arm. It's the mount itself that is the problem.

Purdie Shuffle (John) recommends turning the L-arm upside down, although it might place a rail type mounted drum very low.

A Pearl ISS type suspension system might be another option.

Good idea! I just placed a bid on a Gauger RIMS mount on ebay for $20. If I get it for that, great. If not, probably wont up my bid..

I probably also need to double check that I have the adjustments on the mount tightened well.

My Slingerland rack tom does the same thing. For me I've found that tuning it while mounted helps a lot. For example, if I tune the batter head evenly off the kit and then mount it on the kit the weight of the tom pulls the head slightly out of tune with itself. The lug nearest the mount goes a little sharp if I remember right. I've also found that there's a limited number of tunings that will sound good on that tom when mounted. I chalk that up to the limitations of the mount which a RIMS mount would surely fix but I like the old look. Definitely try tuning it on the kit and try tuning it to different notes and see what works better.

I have found that same thing Steve! Just that little bit of pressure from the hang adds a little tension to one side of the drum.
