Just looking for a quick answer/suggestion. My Supra still has the original 18 strand snares under it but want to get a set of the closest sounding aftermarket replacements just in case. I have a few Puresound sets lying around but I think they sound too dark for this snare. The originals give it that nice crisp pop that I love...that's why I bought it in the first place:)
Replacement snares for my 70's LM400 Supra?
16 strand Puresounds are not bad...
Red Ripple '70's Yamaha D-20 20b-12-14f
Piano Black Yamaha Recording Custom Be-Bop kit 18b-10-14f
Snares:
Yamaha COS SDM5; Yamaha Cobalt Blue RC 5-1/2x14; Gretsch round badge WMP; 1972 Ludwig Acrolite; 1978 Ludwig Super Sensitive; Cobalt Blue one-off Montineri; Yamaha Musashi 6.5X13 Oak; cheap 3.5X13 brass piccolo
The Dynamix wires (http://www.drumfoundry.com) are the closest
I've found to the original Ludwig wires.
You can find the MIT 'Snappy' OEM Ludwig wires that come on new Ludwig
snares at interstatemusic.com - they're not bad.
I've also heard good things about Canopus Vintage series wires as well.
PureSounds are too dark for me on Ludwig metal snares.
Hope this helps.

Canopus is the way to go for 'close-to' vintage. They come close to old Slingerland wires also IMO
