Repair a shell that is out of round

You can use a couple of ratchet strap's (to equalize the pressure) and steam.

BUT!

You have to be very careful of too much moisture, for it will separate the ply's.

I understand that most of us don't have the equipment to tackle this, but I'm just wondering here: I read the other thread about the RK (fantastic job, btw) and I saw this pic. Wouldn't it work?? I mean, assuming you tried it one area at a time, wouldn't you be able to minimize the risk of the wood splitting or separating?? And then, when you've taken care of most of the damage, then use a round piece of plywood to bring the whole drum to shape?? Just throwing ideas here...

Thank you for all the ideas. It is after all a concert tom and playable as is. I wouldn't throw it out until I found another bare shell to move the wrap and hardware on to. I am now thinking I should do just that and experiment with the deformed shell after I find another. If you experts are saying this looks like a lost cause then I think my chances of screwing this up more are pretty good.

Bondo, if you decide to throw that shell out, i would love the challenge of fixing it, maybe we can work out a deal. Let me know.

I would have to politely disagree.

It's only wood....and wood can be repaired.

It might take considerable effort in this case and maybe not worth the effort for most of us. But, I think, to bring that drum back into round....is a nice little challenge if one has the time and patience to do so. If it was brought back into round it would be quite an accomplishment....and make for a very good video clip.

Go for it!

Trash it and get another shell. Seriously. Getting that one back into round is not going to happen, and not really worth the effort it'll take to try. Sorry to be so negative/the bringer of bad news, but in my very humble opinion, -that one- is just beyond saving.John

JohnYour over thinking it now, lol! You were the first one to suggest throwing it away, and now I agree with that!

Can't help it. LOL It was an interesting problem. It just started me thinking about 'how' it could be done. Mike is correct. The big flaw in the idea is cannibalizing one shell to fix another!

Oh well, I gave it a go!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I agree with John and most here.Firstly, that kind of damage, most likely is moisture related,so there has to be severe damage to the shell, right from the get go.Secondly...Ive NEVeR seen a drum warped in so many different directions. That's a first for me.

I think in order to even attempt to put that shell back in round, you'd,need to use a high pressure/heat molding process, similar to how Pearl makes their shells.Even using that..you're likely to crack some or all the plys, and create voids, and even more problems, like tuning an even head seating

In the end, you'd just be creating a Frankenstein drum, with endless problems.Continue with the project ,just out of curiosity if you want, but don't expect too much, and be prepared to harvest parts, and kill off the monster.Just my 2 cents.
