I have these 2 shells coming back after getting some minor surgery done on them and was wondering since i,ve never owned this era, what would you feel the best head selection would be for them.I love drums to be resonant and full of tone, but i heard RB drums can be "unforgiving".

If they are 3-ply I would say calfskin...that would give you the authentic "great Gretsch sound" thats heard on all the Bluenote recordings. If they are 6-ply, I would say Aquarian texture coated or Remo coated Ambassadors (the Vintage A would be ideal, but they only make them in tom sizes) as those were designed with plastic heads in mind in the first place. The 3-ply drums were almost all pre-plastic heads and sound best with real calf heads IMO

These shells are the Starlite finish which i believe makes them 61.Doe that tell you whether they are 3 or 6 ply?

If I remember my Gretsch history correctly, the 3-ply drums were all used up by late 1959-early 1960, so yours SHOULD be 6-ply shells, but there are always exceptions....
