Radio King? Krupa? help

I bought this snare last week. I'm still trying to unravel the exact year and model... I thought I knew until I got it, and looked inside. There are mystery holes on both the throw-off and butt side.

It definitely needs some work! Cracked lug, some surface cracks (I hope that's all they are).

I'm just trying to get some info before I take it apart and start doing work on it.

Thanks in advance for any info you guys can give me!!!

Strangely enough I have the same type of radio king in WMP and it has 2 holes, one either side of the clam shell throw just like yours has.

Looks like it's gone through some hardware changes over the years. I've seen a couple of RKs with the clamshell strainer and butt that when one side or the other bit the dust a conventional butt end was installed. Perhaps happened twice with this one. Also the tin straps are a hassle to find sometimes and a conventional butt gets installed in a pinch.

I wouldn't sweat it much, what's done is done. Get it dialed in and I'm sure it will sound great.

The badge to me looks like the second cloud badge..... 1937 to 1943, but it is well worn and might be one of the others. The grommet looks kinda big, it's covering a lot of the script... can you post an interior of the grommet?

Looks to me like it might have originally had a three point strainer,then was upgraded to a clamshell type. Either way great drum. Solid shell.

Hey beef;

I have to agree with what kevins said. The badge has probably been off that drum at some point. None of my slingys have any script covered by the grommet, nor do any of these;

While there have been hardware changes and it looks like it could have been some type of 3 point strainer at one time, it wasn't done at the factory, the holes are in the wrong places. Like kevins said, having specific wires and such, in a pinch it was probably changed to use a "generic" set of snares.

You may want to go here;

Tonnes, (yes, metric), of info on Radio Kings and badges and Slingerland history in general.

Also, the washers on your snare wires aren't in the proper place. There should be 1 washer between the throwoff and the wires as well as 1 washer between the butt and the wires to achieve proper spacing.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

Killer, Thanks for the info guys! Currently it's in pieces, being cleaned.

I'll be taking the shell to my good friend and local drum guru Paul Montinari to see if its out of my league to repair.

I'll put up some pics when I start work on it.

Thanks again!

Upgraded?

Most people would feel it was DOWNgraded.....myself included.
