Radio King Kit Info Please! Last viewed: 17 seconds ago

Hey Guys,

I am considering picking up this kit, and I was wondering if the Radio King experts could tell me a little about it based on the pictures. I am wondering if it is a factory kit, and specifically if any parts look out of the ordinary or mixed era etc. I havent seen enough of these to really know what to look for, but I am really excited about possibly picking this one up.

I noticed that the size of the re-rings differ between the tom and bass drum. I also noticed that it looks like the bolts that hold on the tom mount are different lengths (see the pic that shows them coming through to the inside of the shell).

Also, if you could tell me what YOU would pay for these 3 drums I would appreciate it. By the way, the sizes are 26/13/16 and the kit comes with chip board cases.

Thanks as always for the help!

I don't know what I would pay, but if those go to the studio, they should be wearing some fine, fresh new leather shoes when they cut the first tracks, at least the batters anyway. Those are sweet, Adam!

Nice old kit, and as best as this amateur can tell, the pieces seem to go together:

That badge was in use from 1946-48.

All of the drums have the "super" lug, which was in use from the early '40s 'til 1955.

The "'Lock Quick' Ratchet Tom Tom Holder" and Ray McKinley internal bass muffler are appropriate for 1940s drums.

Claws & T's on the bass look right for the period.

The differing widths on the re-rings between the toms and bass are typical. The ring on the toms should be 2 1/4" wide while the ones on the bass should be 1 5/8".
As for mismatching bolts... I wouldn't be surprised if a few were replaced over the past 60+ years.

My only complaint: Where's the snare?

Thanks guys!

I am going to work out a deal for it this week. Been chatting with the seller over the past few days. I wish there was a matching snare too, but I can find one of those someday...plus the new snare I just had built by Sam at Detroit Custom Drum Co is a throwback to this very era Slingy. It will go nicely with this kit.

We are talking about doing $1000 cash plus a few hundred in trade. Does that sound fair?

Thanks,

Adam

Nice find.....

I just recently sold the exact kit,but in BDP,with the matching 5-1/2 by 14 Gene Krupa 3 point strainer for $2,500 to Roundhead Studios in Auckland, New Zealand.

I Novus polished the shells, and hand polished every metal part on the kit..........talk about a lot of hours of work! But,the set glows now.

Neil Finn from Crowded House bought the kit,and owns the high end studio, and I told him the kit would sound best with calf heads,so he bought all new top calf heads and BD heads from Rob Cook.

I am going to ship by Friday to them.

Luckily,I have a local guy that makes custom cardboard boxes!

I would hate to see their shipping bill!

Hold up here.

Hey VM, check out the first pic of the kit. Is it just me or did someone drill the bass drum for some sort of disappearing spur? Thats not factory is it? It comes with the clip on spurs, but the ones shown in the pic are clearly added right?

Is that a red flag for the price on this thing?

Thanks!

How does this affect the deal price in your estimation? I don't want to plunk down a huge pile of money on something that is not completely original. What do you think?

Thanks,

Adam

Sounds like the mounts were there when he got the drum, but he added the actual spurs himself. He also has the original clip on spurs.

He says the drum looks clean inside and out. I guess it is possible that they were professionally added later on, but the mounts dont have any name on them.

Now I am nervous about throwing down that much money on this thing.

What should I do?
