Radio King Confusion

Loading...

Hi there,

can any of you chaps fathom out whats happening inside these shells? I gather it's a mixed set that's been re-wrapped hence the wrap folding over the edges, could anyone shed anymore light on what's going on with the re-rings/edges? Recut/Original? Dates, shell construction? Value? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The wrap was never trimmed! I've never seen a hack-job like that in my life. The bearing edges need to be exposed. Damn butcher. The shoddy work some people get away with is unbelievable.

Radio Kings. Definitely a rewrap (tight pattern modern BDP and the worst I've ever seen,) which brings down resale value. Shame really, that's an otherwise valuable old kit. Shells look to be 3-ply mahogany with wide rock maple re-rings.

Yes it's a shame. The lugs on the tom have been replaced too for later ones. Im interested as it is a 20" bass drum. What do you reckon it's worth John?

Do you reckon they're all from the same era?

Doug, all the signs are, that it's an orphan kit. (Assembled) The clips on the rack tom, hoops on the floor tom, single tension rack tom, dual tension floor and bass... mish-mosh. Still, they are great and intrinsically valuable vintage drums in their own right. They'll always be just players, so the real value is in how great they sound. Resale? Tough call to assign value. As keepers, for gigging and playing... you'd be hard put to find a better sounding set of drums anywhere.

I 'think' the cloud badge bass drum and rack tom are from an earlier era than the floor tom.

Either keep em, or send them to me! I'll put em right in no time. Great old drums you have there.

The rack tom is very early. Those top and bottom red felt mufflers and T handles are the give away It should have the streamlined lugs. If you take the diamond plate mount off you should find two holes side by side where the original mount was. The original mount should have been a hoop mount clamp that would clamp on the bass drum hoop.

Would the ride tom originally of been fitted with the double ended lugs that you'd find on the snare drums?

This is what the original mount would have looked like. These are not my pictures.
