That is a good reference. I had seen it before.
The 3-ply shells with reinforcement rings of the 50s, 60s, and early 70s (the "steam-bent" variety ref. in above article) produced a "warmer" sound associated with the music styles of that period. Drums companies (I have Ludwig and Slingerland in mind in particular) began shifting in the mid-to-late 70s to the multi-ply shells without the reinforcement rings to match the need for more "punch" as rock music began to evolve. I like both shell types and sounds.
I grew up in the 60s & 70s, and remember that being an "issue" at that time.
