Question regarding the Tango strainer on a 20's Universal

Hi all

I recently acquired a 1920's Universal snare. I'm wondering if there is an updated set of snare wires I can use or am I stuck with these original ones?

These are very hard to get tight.

I would like to play this drum as much as possible. It's a 4x15.

Any insight appreciated.

I can think of 2 options. 1. Replace the wires with nylon such as that used for tennis rackets. 2. Use a regular set of snares and attach them with string like you always do. I use option 2 for my snare drum and it sounds real good.
