Question for the Gretsch Guys

Loading...

To all you Gretsch guys out there: Why do you think this kit doesn't move at $1799 with free shipping?

This is the first Gretsch kit I recall seeing on the floor of a music shop in downtown Haverhill, MA. White satin flame Progressive Jazz set. It was right around the approximate era of this kit, being 1967-8 or so.

Same color, same 4 drums. New with hardware and no cymbals, the kit was on the floor for about $660.

Flash forward 45 years and you can step into it for a factor of 3x, with some where and tear, but maybe with the aging of the maple to offset that. So again, why no sale? I sold the three-piece in aqua satin flame a couple of years ago for $1600 (no snare), but the same flaming issues. So I'm puzzled about this one. I'd like to have it, but.............

I like the fact that the rail is on top too, assuming that is the original location, which it appears to be. I'd want the extended spoon to raise the tom up a bit, but other than that it looks ready to roll.

Not mine, by the way.

I've watched this kit also, My guess the economy is in the tank not many kits at selling much above this price point.

The seller is fifteen minutes from me. They have a huge selection of vintage drums, but with jacked up prices.

I dunno. Gretsch less, say, a minimum of $100 to ship and for me closer to $150, not bad. Kent with all those drums, wild finish and bongos to boot for $699. Rogers drums there have been kind of high, but I don't get the Gretsch. Heck, I'd be happy to have that kit with new jet black wrap on it for that price (if I was buying that is).

using ebay as my guide Rogers drums haven't fared any better than any other drum companies. all of them are selling for less than a few years ago.

My guess is the finish and the economy. I bought a Gretsch set high and sold it for much less than what I had into it. It was a champagne sparkle round badge. Final sale was $1400. Now I did keep the snare, cymbal arm and floor tom legs. Still though I thought a 12 16 20 would fetch more.

The most expensive kit in my is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. All things being equal because these drums are not being made anymore I think their value will climb higher. Still most of who I sell to are clients back in Europe. Even there though the Euro is not as strong as it was against the dollar.

The most impulsive buy I made was to get my Clubdate kit back. Paid near twice what I sold it for to get it back.

For reference another progressive jazz kit in 12 14 20 with matching snare in blue sparkle sold for just over $2k.

I am surprised at the USA market at the moment. I just purchased a $1K snare via Reverb, for nearly half price. I am holding on to my nice vintage here; and that's with prices way up from where you are. Currency is kaput - of course. I'd love to buy 10 vintage USA mixed, today!

Bob Kiley @ Haverhill Music Center. What a nice, nice guy. Bought a lot of stuff there before Daddy's took over the market in the Merrimac valley. And Donn Carr in Peabody, just great people to do business with.

Well, here's a test of your memory teverson-sr: The Gretsch drums I saw back then were in Angelotti's Music Store near the pet shop off Fleet Street. The entire area was destroyed by "Urban Renewal", so none of that exists any longer.

And yes, Bob Kiley is a super guy. He played pianno and accompanied a vocalist at my brother-in-law's funeral earlier this year. So to let you know, he is still active.

Donn Carr is a great guy too. His shop is still in operation, at least it was a couple of years ago when I last stopped in to say hello.

So you must remember some of the finds we used to uncover in the Merrimack Valley, not the least of which were commonly found at Daddy's Junky Music!
