Anyone know the quality & sound of Slingerland chrome wrapped 5 ply African Mahogany bass drums manufactured in the mid-70's in Niles, IL ?

Well,they are very good drums,but the finish is easily marred and they are virtually unrecoverable.The glued metal will pull the plies right out of the drum.

Actually, if it's a Niles drum, only the outer ply is mahogany.
I found out the hard way in 1981 when I scored a chrome 24" and wanted to strip it to cover it in silver sparkle to put with another kit.
The post about the ply getting wrecked is spot on. You need a vice, a hammer, some acetone, and a bit of patience to not make a mess.
Sonically, they're among my personal favorites. Very well-made too.
