Pricing Help Please - WFL and Ludwig drums

Loading...

I listed some drums for sale locally, but am thinking I probably need to put them on eBay and want to see what is fair and reasonable to expect.

I have what I believe are a 1950's era WFL bass (22x14) and snare 14x5.5 with nickel hardware. I added a 1960's era Ludwig 16" floor tom with clear interior.

The WFL drums have some rust/missing chrome on some of the WFL stamped claws.

I am including a throw away rack tom just so some one would have a rack tom to play. How would price out the bass, snare and floor?

Here are the details:

For sale is a virgin 1950's era WFL Bass (22x14) and WFL snare (14x5.5) in gorgeous Black Diamond Pearl finish. This snare was known under a couple of names including Barrett Deems and later became the JazzFest when they cut the depth to 5". Also included is a 16" Ludwig floor tom also in Black Diamond Pearl and a 12" rack tom (made by Pearl I believe) in a similar finish as the other drums, but it is more blue than black and is not a 100% perfect match.

Details:

The Bass, Snare (no muffler)feature 3 ply Mahogany shells and are from the 1950's. These 2 pieces were likely part of a 3 piece set that would have included a clip on rack tom or floor tom depending upon the set up ordered, but many times were purchased in different configuratons. The finish on these 2 drums look incredible!!! In most places you can barely discern any difference from where the hardware has been for decades. The nickel hardware on the snare and bass has all been deep cleaned and polished. They show wear, but given the fact that they are approximately 50-60 years old, they look pretty good.

The bass has a new reso head and features all original parts. The claws and tension rods are all original WFL pieces, and the claws are engraved with WFL on each of them - this is rare!!!

The bass is from the era before drilled spurs and would have had a bass spur that was clipped to the hoop. However, the bass is playable without the spur. I can include a clip-on Gibraltar style bass drum stopper (not pictured) to keep it from moving. That along with a decent bass drum pedal with Velcro or spikes should keep it in place.

The bass was never drilled for a tom mount, so it is virgin, except for the included cymbal mount (arm not included as I do have one).

The snare features brand new heads and what likely are the original snare wires. The throw off is a little sticky, but works fine and does what it is supposed to do. If I were gigging with it, I would probably pick up a current Ludwig strainer that has the same hole set up. The snare does not have a muffler although the holes for it are present.

Toms:

The 16" floor tom is a 1960's era Ludwig floor tom with clear maple interior and 3 ply reinforcement rings. The heads have plenty of life in them. The reso head has tape residue but is a newer coated Ambassador otherwise. One of the floor tom legs has a good bit of rust, but the others are fine.

The 12" rack tom has a Phillipine Mahogany shell (no re-rings). The heads on this drum are well used.

I basically am including the 12" rack tom free so the new owner will have a complete kit to play. Ebay has add-on toms available that would match the rest of the drums.

Thanks for your help!

My best guess is give or take 800-1000. The floor tom looks a great match but the maple on the shell vs the mahogany may be too different tonally to get somebody to bite. WFL's do a thing and clear 3 ply does a thing, but they are very different things. I'd put it out there for 1000 obo locally, then I'd actually part it out if going the Ebay route. Good luck to you.

Mariosdrums, thanks for the note. I actually listed them for $950 locally.

In my mind I was thinking the virgin bass = $400, snare = $300, floor tom = #250, rack tom is a freebie.

Thanks.
