Hi...I have a friend who has a set he is considering selling, but he's not sure of the value. It's a maple Premier, three pieces, 8", 16" (or 14"...not sure) 20". Any input is greatly appreciated!

Nice kit with potential.

Based on the pictures, it looks like the following:

Tom Tom - 8x12

Floor Tom - 16x16

Bass Drum - 17x20 (actually 14x20 shell)

The 1965 catalog shows the same style of floor tom leg mounts and the 1968 catalog shows the same style of bass drum L-rods (T-rods). I'm guessing the kit is closer to 1968.

The bass drum has a Rogers Swivomatic tom tom mount, which is not uncommon and might have even been dealer installed. The wrap has been removed from all of the shells too. If it was originally covered in a Duroplastic (Premier's name), it's possible the wrap was cracked. It also looks like the tom tom and floor tom still have the cast hoops and slotted tension rods.

Not sure on the exact value, but in it's current dust covered, long term storage with a foam cooler of parts condition, I would say $150 - $200? That's if everything is still with the drums, the chrome is in good shape (Premier usually is) and there are no extra hole or shell damage. It's a good candidate for a re-wrap too. Aquamarine would look really sharp.

Keep us updated. I'm guessing you're "interested"? ;)

Would be a shame to rewrap it...if factory finish..

doesn't look bad at all..to me..

The BD has pre 68 Deco lugs..but post 68 claws/rods..so maybe someone "upgraded"?

12" tom has the pre 68 beer barrel rims, and pre 68 badge...

Also,I find it is quite hard to find vintage Prem kits HERE > (U.S.) with a 20" BD..almost all are 22"...

And,someone else has mentioned...12" toms are pretty hard to find also....

Is there a serial number on the FT badge? Its kind of hidden on there...if so...puts it at 1970 onward....As it has the newer style lugs....

Try to grab them ! With some Johnson's Paste Wax,and a few hours work...they could turn out pretty sweet!

blairndrums is right, if it's the factory natural finish, then a good cleanup and some wax would make them look great. Not that it couldn't be special ordered, but natural finish didn't appear in the Premier catalogs until 1973. You should be able to tell, if you look closely.

If the bass drum and the tom tom only have the holes for the Swivomatic mounts, then there's a good possibility the kit was ordered without the Premier mounts with the intention of the dealer or owner installing the Rogers pieces.

Tim,

I have a "New for 72" brochure, and they shown a natural wood finish kit...and it says that more and more drummers are asking for this finish...

That finish looks too nice to be done by someone non factory...besides..it is a LOT of work to do...

I vote for factory finish...

Looks like a normal Premier kit from the 60's era. However I do not recall that colour. Hope this helps.
