I have a pre-serial # Supraphonic that is 5.5"x14". Is this a rare size?

I would like to see that drum.Did you measure from bearing edge to bearing edge? The shell should be 5",but is its actually 5 1/2,well I have never seen one.And a minor correction..that drum is a Super Ludwig 400,not really a supraphonic.

I am witing for my Nikon to charge and i will post a pic. And yes, you are right it is a super 400 not a superphonic. I have multiple Supra snares and this on is a little different.

So the snare sits higher that the other 8 supras that i have but when i took it apart and measured the shell it was just over 5". I am not sure why it sits higher with the hoops on? Were the hoops taller in the early 60s?

Those rims should also be COB if they are original, but to your question...well I never checked, but I thought they were the same height.

How long have the heads been on and played? As its played a while you might have cranked the others down and lowered the hoop closer to the drum.

Yeah,i thought of that too.If I can find it,I have a photo of Ginger Bakers set from the 60's and the drum head on the 12" tom is so stretched out and worn, that the top bearing edge is higher than the top of the rim.

Can't you just measure the hoops?

you are a genius! jk. I did and it was the placement of the heads. The lower hoop is a bit different because it is COB whick added to the height. My mistake. Thanks!
