pre-70s Ludwig Snare Stand as Tom Stand? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I've decided to try out an old Ludwig snare stand to hold up my rack tom on my 68 Ludwigs. Sadly I won't have much time to experiment with it before a gig on Sunday night. Anyone using one of these with success? My fear is that since it isnt the more modern snare stand that you tighten the basket on, I may watch my 13" fall off during the gig. Any help/tips/horror stories/success stories are greatly appreciated!

But most importantly, Won't it look awesome?!?!

I use a Wfl flat base stand on my 9x13" it will work just fine.

I'm mainly doing it for the look but was worried the drum may fall out of the basket since it doesn't clamp on the drum like modern stands do.

As long as you don't tilt the drum at a severe angle, it will stay put. I am a hard hitter mine stays right where it should.

I used a flat-base snare stand with fixed arms for years to hold a 13" Rogers tom, and it work just fine. It's important to properly position the one adjustable arm tightly so that the tom almost "snaps" into place. Even at a 45 degree angle, it should hold fine.

I used one years ago to hold a 10x14 tom an never had any problems. Some folks actually prefer these to the clamping types because they can kill the sound of a tom if you clamp them tightly.

Just make sure the arm that extends is on the top with the two fixed arms on the bottom.
