Painted 70's Ludwig LM402

Loading...

So I picked up a 70's blue/olive pointed badge 6.5x14 Supraphonic. Sadly the guy I bought it from (or whomever he got the drum from) painted it purple. It looks like they stripped everything off before they did it so it's just the shell, but any ideas of how to get the paint off without ruining/scraping the chrome?

Is the badge painted over also ? strip the drum down to bare shell. If the badge is ok. take great care on what I tell you,. Use Goof Off it will remove all the paint, but it will remove the badge paint on a blue olive badge also that is why I stated take great care not to get this on the badge. You can get it almost at any Home Improvement store etc. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Goof-Off-Spot-Remover-4.5oz/17209312

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

regular paint thinners will work too. As VM2K says though, be careful with the badge. I stripped black spray paint off a Dynasonic with thinners and it didn't affect the badge but that may not be the base with the B&O badge. The finish on the drum (chrome, if it's still there) will be fine.

For this method I just soaked rags in thinners and wrapped them around the shell and left for 15 minutes and then the paint came off just by rubbing with rags. No scraping required. It's a very quick job, too. Just do it outside or in a well ventilated area.

Remember, most Supras get painted because the chrome is toast.

Thanks for the help...

1. The badge was NOT painted over. I think the best course of action will be to tape over it while I'm stripping the paint. I've also read that Aircraft Paint remover is another way to go without affecting the chrome or the Ludalloy.

2. The chrome has only minor pitting so I have a feeling the chrome isn't completely toast. BUT in the case that it is, I still think I'd rather have a work chrome Supra than a Barney purple supra.

good call. Not sure I'd be comfortable pulling out a purple supra at a gig.

Thinners will probably be less toxic than a full on stripper. And if the paint is a standard spray paint then that's all you'll need. It comes off really easily.

Post pics when you're done
