P86 Millenniam Strainer

The debate on these strainer models is endless.

Acknowledging the success that many have had working with P83 and P85 models, I had several p85's that slipped. My best solution was to put a bit of nylon tubing on the threaded rod between the head of the tension knob and the throw off housing. I also used rubber bands, bits of velcro, and lots of tape, to keep the throws from disengaging.

Although not a unique problem, lots of folks haven't experienced the same.

So I switched to P86's which fit the same holes. The early ones had pitiful little set screws that snapped--probably a start on the negative side of their reputation. Since replacing the P86's have held up well for me.

Please try one and let us know which way your opinions land.

Thanks very much for the input, Patrick! I'll probably stick with my black face P85 for now. P86's including shipping go from about $79.00 C to $103.00 C. The P83's range from about $75.00 C (rough shape) to about $195.00 C. I've never had a problem with my P85 but, on the other hand , I haven't been playing it for years either. Shipping to Canada can certainly be costly and our Canadian money isn't worth Monopoly dollars! Thanks again, everyone.

You're right, Heraldo! Hot and humid in the summer and cold and bleak in the winter! I used to live in Niagara Falls. Quite the tourist town for sure. Not as congested as Toronto but, getting there. I used to enjoy riding my old chopper up and down Clifton Hill but, no more. The drivers are insane! Riding a bike is too dangerous any more. Thanks for the invite, Heraldo. Any time you're in these parts, let me know. You are more than welcome here, amigo!

Hi Salty!!I..M.H.O. regarding mechanism... Less is More!!I mean, P83 is probably the simplest strainer of Ludwig's "Modern era"..It's super-smooth, super-fast and, the greatest point of it's design... how simple and accesible is the fine adjustment of the wire tensión by the top knob...It's a rough and firm strainer though! I have about 10 snares with it, they all work super-fine! WalkingYes SirP86 is not a bad strainer at all, I certainly guess that objectively the knob position is not the best of the design...I have just a few "new snares" with this strainer..... hmmmThat's why I said, looks better than it Works! In the other hand, the P85 is probably the most controversial strainer ever!!! Mainly the last gen of P85 (Chrome face) has a huge percentage of malfunction and complains!!FYI I have had about 30 snares with the P85... those with the black face (and mainly w/ 12 holes) works much much better than the "modern" ones...Well.... after all, It's a question of preferences I guess!!PartyHope it helps Buddy, Greetings from far South!!

Hey, Heraldo!

Hope everything is warm and sunny where you are! Not here, amigo.

I just installed a P83 on my Supra and so far, there is no question about it's functionality. Like you said, it's simple yet very sturdy feeling. I especially like the fact that I can see every thread when I loosen or tighten the tuning knob. With the P85, that spacer on the threads was an obstruction ( I have a post about this from this morning). You certainly seem to have nailed it, Heraldo. Thanks again.

I happen to like the P86!Walking

I think it's classy look and etching adds a little something to the drum. It's smooth and easy to operate too without sliding action! Sure, it's a bit pricey but you can find them for under $50 if you look hard enough.

I'm sure you're right, schmegeggie. The P86's are a classy and I'm certain, well-functioning strainer. I know I'll be searching around for one in the future. It would be cool to compare the three. Up here, in the north, because our money is not worth the plastic upon which it's printed, it is doubtful that I could find one for fifty bucks Canadian. That's okay. Cant hurt to look. I suppose that in the end though, it is all subjective. Thanks for your input, sir.
