Opinions on a Rogers Snare

Loading...

I won this drum in an auction recently. (Haven't received it yet.) The weight of the drum was listed as '10 lbs.' Which seems a bit heavy to me. Aluminum supra's weigh in at 7 lbs. I'm thinking this one might have a brass shell in order to tip the scales at 10 lbs. Could also be a steel shell. Was Rogers making steel shell Powertones in the 60's?

It's an 8 lugger, looks to be in very good condition although it needs a serious cleaning. I want to add it to my Rogers mardi gras kit. What do I have here?

Thanks in advance for your time and info... sorry I don't have a better photo, I copped this one from the auction. BTW, are these the 'tall-boy' hoops on this drum?

All Powertones are brass. The hoops do appear to be "tall hoops."

+1. Seemingly, COB Powertone. Yeah, that is heavy.

From The Ploughman

Real drums are heavy.

That statement is utterly profound!

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

It's a brass Powertone, great drum, and though it is weighty, I think that 10lbs. is an exaggeration.

Thank you, gents! I'll post up some photos when it arrives and then a couple after I detail it. I'm psyched to add the Powertone to the mardi gras kit!

Ok, the drum arrived today. It was a funky, filthy mess, but it cleaned up beautifully. It's all there and original with the exception of the heads and wires. The snares are vintage 60's Ludwig (script logo) and the heads are a Remo Ambassador on top with a vintage Ludwig stock 300 snare head. The drum looks and sounds great. Not hard to tell it's a brass shell when you hear it.

Here's a few shots after clean-up.

Here's my Cleveland-tagged COB Powertone, tipping the scale at 9 pounds and one half ounce! The scale is a Pitney Bowes that is accurately calibrated up to 70 pounds. So, even if the seller said 10 pounds, it's pretty close!

idrum - That's a beauty, man! Your shell is shinier than mine. Mine has a slight haze from age/handling. Like nickel. I used a good metal polish on it too. Thanks for the weigh-in. I was wondering about the 'advertised' weight.

I'll 'likely' be flipping this one in the for sale section. If anybody is 'in-love' with it, pm me. In the meantime, I'm taking it to rehearsal this week to see what it can do. It 'sounds like' a good work-horse snare drum. I love the more raw and open sound of 8-lug metal snares. (As opposed to 'drier' sounding 10-luggers.) I'll let you know how she goes.
