It's surely a different species and I would assume from the same part of the world. Just wondering and realizing I've never seen anyone ask before.
On 3 ply MIJ shells, what type of wood are the rings?
Yes .. don't know either... but am guessing that they used a Luan or ply that was laminated using the same.. often grain looks to be the same..

Zildjian, Sabian , UFIP & Paiste mix.
I have seen later MIJ shells with ply lauan rings, Tama Imperialstars come to mind, but the great majority of 60s 3 ply MIJ shells have solid bent rings of a blonde semi-almost-hardwood. It doesn't look to be anything I would recognize from other drums.

I would also say it´s birch:-)

I once had a vintage MIT kit that had pine re-ring. God knows how they bent it, but they did.

Seen plenty of pine snare shells over the years
Played them also?
What's your opinion about them. I'm currently working on a 15x7 Douglas pine segemented snare drum and a 14x7 oregon pine segmented snare drum.
sorry for being off topic.

Haven't played them personally.
Do you mean Douglas Fir? That and Oregon are the same timber
