Old Ludwig 6 lug snares: Universal and Pioneer

Loading...

Hey guys, I'm looking into possibly picking up an old 6.5x14 wood shell Ludwig snare. I currently the metals covered, as well as a 5x14 pioneer and jazz fest, radio king, and some newer Yamaha woods.

Anyone have experience with a 6.5 pioneer or universal 6 lug (mahogany shell) Ludwig snare? I'm seeing a few out there, but both are kind of rare. Thoughts?

Not too often you see one in 6.5" depth. Expect to pay handsomely.

The 5"ers are more common and can be had in the low $100s.

Yes they are rare. Why not a 5 inch? I've had several and currently have a transition badge blue sparkle pioneer that I really love. 2 less lugs than the Jazz Fest really let the shell sing. Great drums.

ive got a 48-52 wfl supreme concert model,6.5 mahogany finish with 6 lugs. it kills! this is one of my favorite snares. they are the earlier version of a 6.5 pioneer, which you hardly ever see. get one if you can. you wont regret it.

I had two of those Pioneers, a Ludwig and a WFL, and later sold one. They used to be common and cheap. They are like a second or third-tier collectable. After the Jazz Fest market was picked clean, I guess Pioneers were next up in the eBay batter's box.

I have a 5x14 pioneer, but thought a 6.5 might be cool. I agree the 6 lugs allows for a more open sound...

I'll have to check out a WFL sometime!
