In my old catalogs, Laquers were available. Colors such as Jet Black,Wedge Wood Blue,Emerald Green, Empire Copper, etc. With these colors, I can see a nice red being offered. I do think it is an original factory paint job.

Thanks for all the info you have provided, I'm really digging this set regardless of looks! I've changed the heads and acquired a Ludwig Standard cymbal to go with it. Now on to find a drum teacher...!
