Odd Ludwigs? Last viewed: 1 day ago

I recently picked up a 70s Ludwig in Black Cortex wrap.

The odd (for me anyway) is that the kit is 3-ply with Granitone, and no serial numbers on the B/O badges?

The other thing is that allt the toms have interior dampers both up and down on the shell. Looks factory...

Any thoughts?

The only real odd thing I see is the internal tone controls up and down. That wasn't something Ludwig normally did, however I know that on special order they would do just about anything.

The no-number badges surfaced in and around 1970-71, which was about the same time the granitone interior showed up in the classic line. The same shells were granitone prior to that in the Standard line of drums.

However, Ludwig was know for "anomilies" (sp?). I have some Black Cortex Ludwig drums, all with B/O badges and close serial numbers so I'm fairly certain they were originally together as part of a set. 3 of them have granitone interiors, 2 have the clear-coat interiors (one is an 18x20 FT, and IF I'm correct that size of drum never was produced granitone...).

I had a kit and the mounted and floor tom had two badges and two tone controls.

According to Rob Cook's "The Ludwig Book" (chart on p. 181), "Nearly all shells began to receive granitone interior." The change from the white painted interior to the natural finish interior was between 1968 and 1969.

In 1976 they went to the 6 ply maple & poplar with no reinforcement rings and back to natural finish interiors.

So, the granitone interiors (classic line) actually had about a 5 year run, which was longer than the 3 ply w/rings natural finish interior...

In my experience, it's normal to see either Granitone or clear interiors on any Ludwigs made from circa '71 to '77. I'm fairly certain that Ludwig was doing both Granitone and clear interiors at the same time, for a number of years. I have no idea why they did one or the other.

I've seen two kits just like yours - Granitone interiors, mufflers up and down, and no serial numbers on the badges, and both were custom orders from a shop in NYC, I believe Frank Ippolito's. One of the sets was custom ordered in '75 and received in '76, the other in '74. Both were WMP.

Thanks,

Bill

Ok! Thanks for that info too.....

They must have made clear and Granitone at the same time....

Maybe the ones with "ugly" inner maple plies, got the Granitone treatment? :)

The tone controls are in the same "field" as the B/O badge?

That means later 70´s , right?

This kit is strange! :-)

The 16"x16" is a 3-ply with clear interiors and 186xxxx serialnumber.

Twin dampers on that one too. The other drums have, like I said earlier:

3-ply Granitone B/O Badge without serialnumbers. Twin dampers (up and down), in the same fields as the badge (?).
