Oaklawn Camco Studio Snare Drum Last viewed: 12 minutes ago

John, very nice drum. It's a bit unusual as it has a tone control. Most Studio Models did not have tone controls. The Orchestra Tuxedo Model offered the tone control but it also featured the Aristocrat strainer which yours clearly does not.

Steve, leedy - no extra holes in this one, the throw-off/butt-strainer/tone control are all original to the drum. Nothing appears to have been added afterwards.

Do you think it may have been a special request from a buyer? Did Camco do little custom modifications at customers request? Now you've got me curious.

I'm loving it! The drum sounds rock solid, has amazing tone and is one pro-quality instrument sound-wise. You guys know much more about these drums than I do. Tell me what you can, please. I want to learn more about Camco/Geo. Way. Any good books out there you can recommend?

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I would not be surprised if Camco would install a muffler for a special order. This might also be a dealer installed upgrade with parts supplied by Camco to authorized drum technicians. I think that Bill Crowden's Drum's Limited sold Camco, and Frank's Drum Shop did not. I had music stores in Chicago order drums from the "local" drum factories with the features that did not usually appear in the catalog for those models. One store salesman even put me on the phone with a warehouse guy at Slingerland who walked over to a storage rack for mounted toms while we were talking. He said that he had in his hand the Green Glass Glitter tom I wanted. It had a virgin shell. He asked which type of mount receiver I wanted. Then he asked me a question that I had not thought about. "Will this tom be on your right or on your left when you sit behind the drum set"? The badge and the muffler knob were installed for this drum to be on the right side of a two up configuration. I was able to pick it up at the factory later that day. I hear that the Camco drum sellers in the Chicago area loved dealing with that little hometown factory.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
