Those are called "reinforcing rings). They add stability.

The shell interior is made from the reddish brown Mahogany. The very wide reinforcing rings are made from a blonde wood--probably maple or maybe ash. Those are beautiful drums that would have a white bass drum reso head if I owned them.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
